Tablescape in a Tote: Everything You Need for a Beautiful Picnic

First things first. Choose a tote that’s sturdy, easy to carry, and in a design that makes you smile. I love my Apolis market bag with the long leather handles. It’s stylish, holds a surprising amount, and works beautifully for outdoor gatherings.

A Colorful Table Covering

I love to use colorful Turkish towels as tablecloths. They are lightweight, easy to care for, and just the right size for my portable picnic tables. Vintage tablecloths are another fun option for adding personality and color.

For breezy days, pack a few inexpensive table clips to keep everything in place. You’ll thank yourself when the wind kicks up.

A Pretty Centerpiece

I suggest a simple centerpiece and usually opt for a single type of flower. Sunflowers, daisies, or butterfly ranunculus are picnic favorites. I prep a mason jar at home with water and screw the lid on tight for the trip.

To keep flowers fresh during transport:

• Wrap the stems in wet paper towels
• Slip them into a plastic bag
• Secure with a rubber band

Once you arrive, just pop off the mason jar lid and drop the flowers in. A little ribbon or raffia around the jar adds a nice finishing touch. Bonus: Dried flowers work too… and require no water!

Add a Little Light

If your gathering will stretch into the evening, don’t forget the lighting. It adds ambiance and helps guests see what they’re eating!

There are so many battery-powered options today:

• Mini table lamps
• Flameless votives
• String lights or cute lanterns

Tuck one or two into your tote. You’ll be glad you did.

Setting the Table

I like to bring the real stuff. There is no shame in a Ziploc bag full of actual flatware. It feels more elegant, and I toss it right back into the bag after the meal for easy cleanup.

Here’s what I typically pack:

• Melamine plates: Lightweight, unbreakable, and available in fun patterns
• Insulated cups: Unbreakable, stylish, and easy for guests to keep track of (especially in different colors)
• Flatware: I bring my everyday silverware. Nothing fancy- just sturdy and comfortable to use. (Hint: Pack a couple of extra pieces, in case you drop one in the sand or grass! And remember your serving pieces!)

Napkins to Complete the Look

Cloth napkins are one of my favorite picnic upgrades. They instantly make things feel more special and don’t blow away as easily on a windy day. I love tying in a fun napkin ring, like my Seashell Napkin Ring.

To make cleanup a breeze, I also include a Ziploc filled with pre-wet paper towels which are perfect for spills, sticky fingers, or wiping down surfaces.

Add a Little Décor

Even away from home, a few themed touches can add some personality to your table. If you’re at the beach, bring a few seashells. In the park? A handful of decorative stones or tiny potted succulents add charm without fuss.

The goal is a table that feels personal, festive, and just a little bit extra.
